This course introduces the students to the basic vocabulary, concepts, and methodology associated with drugs of natural origin. The first part explores the fundamentals of pharmacognosy, plant taxonomy, and anatomy as well as quality and safety aspects of plant crude drugs as well as the registration aspects of traditional medicines. The second part explores the plant constituents, sourcing plant materials and plants associated with drugs of natural origin, namely carbohydrates, lipids, phenolics, terpenes, and alkaloids. For each herbal drug, the following topics are discussed: cultivation, collection, processing, biogenesis, structural variation, physical and chemical properties, extraction procedures, and example of
plants containing these drugs.

Through this course, the students will be introduced to the undergraduate research environment in the science disciplines.
This course is designed to explain students’ responsibilities in relation to their research program and to develop research proposals, communication skills, and strategies to prepare students for progression in the research program. The objective of this course is to encourage development of skills essential to research, including reflective and critical thinking, and help students develop effective strategies for improving their research reading and writing.
